கூகிள் மெயில் - முகவரிகளை பார்த்து தேர்ந்தெடுக்க

இது நாள் வரைக்கும் கூகிள் மெயில்-லில் auto-complete மூலமா நாம டைப் பண்ண பண்ண நம்ம காண்டாக்ட் எல்லாம் ஒரு drop down-ல வரும்.. அதுல இருந்து நாம சூஸ் செஞ்சிக்கிட்டு இருக்கோம்... இல்லியா? இப்போ அவங்களே மத்த மின்னஞ்சல்-ல வர மாதிரி ஒரு தனி காண்டாக்ட்ஸ் விண்டோ குடுக்கறாங்க.

ஒரு மெயில் கம்போஸ் பண்ணும்போது அந்த "To"-வை கிளிக் பண்ணுங்க (இன்னிக்கு வரைக்கும் அந்த "To" ஒரு லிங்காக இருந்ததில்லை. இன்றிலிருந்து அது ஒரு லிங்க். இது எவ்ளோ பேர் பார்த்தீங்கனு தேரிலே!). அது ஒரு புது விண்டோ திறக்கும். அதுல உங்க காண்டாக்ட்ஸ் எல்லாம் வரும்.. அதில் செலக்ட் பண்ணிக்கலாம். ஒரு காண்டாக்ட்-ஐ தேடலாம். மேலுள்ள drop down பாக்ஸ்-ல உங்களோட Groups எல்லாம் வந்துடும். செலக்ட் பண்ண காண்டாக்ட்ஸ் எல்லாம் உங்க மெயில்-லில் சேர்ந்துடும்.

இது நல்லா தான் இருக்கு.. ஆனா சில காண்டாக்ட்ஸ் நாம "Cc", "Bcc" -ல போட வேண்டியிருக்கும். அதுக்கு பழயபடி "Add Cc"/"Add Bcc" கிளிக் பண்ணி அதுக்கு அப்பறம் அதற்க்கான காண்டாக்ட்ஸ் செலக்ட் பண்ண வேண்டும்... Microsoft Outlook-ல இருக்கற மாதிரி ஒரே விண்டோ-ல எல்லா வேலையும் முடிஞ்சா நல்ல இருக்கும் இல்லே?

Wikipedia Beta பற்றி ஒரு பதிவுல சொல்லியிருந்தேன். (அது என்னங்க... இங்கிலீஷ்ல ஒரு விஷயத்த சொல்றது அவ்ளோ தப்பான விஷயமா? ஒருத்தர் கூட அந்த பக்கத்துல தலை காட்டலை!). இது அதோட ஒரு follow-up.

Students-க்கும் மற்றவர்களுக்கும் உபயோகமா இருக்கும். விஷயம் இதுதான். இணையதளத்தோட ஒரு பக்கம் மட்டும் PDF ஆக தரவிறக்கம் பண்றது ரொம்ப ஈசியான விஷயம். அதே நமக்கு தேவையான எல்லா பக்கங்களையும் ஒரு முழுமையான புக்கா தரவிறக்கம் செய்துண்டா நல்ல இருக்கும் இல்லியா? இப்போ Wikipedia Beta-ல அதுக்கு ஒரு வழி இருக்கு.

 

 

 

 

உங்க Wikipedia Beta-வின் இடது sidebar-ல “Create a book” கீழுள்ள Options யூஸ் பண்ணிக்கலாம். நீங்க எதோ ஒரு பக்கத்துல இருக்கீங்கன்னு வெச்சிக்கோங்க. அத அப்படியே "Add page to book" பண்ணிக்கலாம். ஒரு புத்தகம் உங்களுக்காக create பண்ணிடுவாங்க.

 

 

 

 

 

 

அந்த புக்குல இன்னும் பல பக்கங்கள் சேர்த்துக்கலாம். ஒரு தடவை நீங்க ஒரு புக் create பண்ணிட்டீங்கனா பக்கத்துல இருக்கற மாதிரி Options வந்துடும். பக்கங்கள் சேர்க்க சேர்க்க இதுல அப்டேட் ஆகிடும்.

 

இந்த புக்க நீங்க edit பண்ணனும்னா "Show Book" click பண்ணுங்க. அந்த ஸ்க்ரீன்ல நீங்க பக்கங்கள மாற்றி அமைக்க, அகற்ற எல்லாம் பண்ணலாம். அந்த ஸ்க்ரீன்லையே நீங்க PDF / OpenDocument Text -ஆக தரவிறக்கம் செய்யலாம். இல்லே புக்காவே order பண்ணலாம் (PediaPress மூலமாக).

அதுமட்டுமில்லே, இன்னும் பல வேலைகள் செய்யலாம். (மேலுள்ள படத்த பாருங்க). புக்குனா வெறும் அந்த ஸ்க்ரீன்-இன் screenshot-னு நினைச்சிடாதீங்க. Index எல்லாம் இருக்குற ரொம்ப proper-ஆன புக்.

இதையும் ட்ரை பண்ணி பார்த்துடலாமே..!!

Useful Bookmarks For Your Browser

Bookmarks are always a useful tool to do some tasks directly from our browsers. Recently, I came across this useful list of bookmarks. Wanted to share with others.

• Twitter Reactions – To keep track of all recent tweets on Twitter on the web page that I’m currently viewing.
• Capture Screenshot – To capture the screenshot of the current page and upload to online services like Flickr, Blogger, Evernote etc. Allows you to crop out the section that you want from the current snapshot.
• ToRead.cc – A bookmark that will send the current page to your email (to read later, to share etc). You need to provide the email address to register with this free service. After registration drag the provided bookmark to your browser. Clicking on the bookmark will then forward the page to the registered email.
• Short URL – Creates shortened URL for the current site using bit.ly service.
• Readability – Creates a readable layout of the current page. Removes distractions on the web page (such as ads etc).
• Tidy Read – Another readability tool, that changes the cluttered web page to a more readable format. Works by changing the underlying CSS to make the page more suitable to read without disturbances.
• Show RSS Feed – A really useful bookmark. Gets the RSS feed associated with the site (if the browser cannot do it by itself). Also lets you to subscribe to the RSS in your favorite reader.
• Edit This Site – You can edit any site with this bookmark. See the video below to see it in action.

• Print What You Like – Will let you print part of web page or whatever you want on the page. It allows you to mark the print area (various options to select the area), and also allows you to save the snapshot as HTML or PDF.
• GMail This – Creates a mail in GMail with selected test from the page pre-populated.
• Sitonomy – Provides all technical information regarding the current site – site’s advertising partners, web stats program, web servers etc. Provided by Sitonomy.
• DownloadPDF – Downloads the webpage as PDF.
• Google Trends – Quickly determine the relative popularity (web traffic) of any web site using the Google Trends for websites service.

கூகிள் ரீடர் பயன்படுத்தறவங்க ஏற்கனவே பார்த்திருபீங்க. புதுசா கொஞ்ச options அறிமுகப்படுதிருக்காங்க.

• "Send to..." : இனி கூகிள் ரீடரில் இருந்தே நீங்க ஒரு செய்திய Blogger, Facebook போன்ற பிரபலமான இணையதளத்திற்கு forward பண்ணலாம். இது மூலம் உங்கள் ப்ளாக்கர் போன்ற பக்கங்களில் செய்திகளை உடனுக்குடன் பகிர்ந்துகொள்ளலாம். உங்க ரீடரில் வரும் ஒவ்வொரு பதிவிற்கும் கீழுள்ள options -ல இதுவும் இருக்கும். உங்களுக்கு வேண்டிய சேவைகளை (Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, Digg etc) Settings -> Sent To பக்கம் மூலம் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளலாம். அங்கே குடுக்கபட்டுள்ளவை மட்டுமல்லாது custom link மூலம் மற்ற பிற தளத்தையும் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளலாம்.
• "Feeds from people you follow": நீங்க follow பண்ணும் உங்க நண்பர்களோட ப்ளாக், ட்விட்டர், பிசாசா போன்ற தளங்களை நீங்க உங்க ரீடரில் சேர்த்துக்கலாம். அதுக்கு "Browse for Stuffs --> From people you follow " பக்கத்திருக்கு தாவுங்கள்.
• "Mark as read": இது நாம எல்லோரும் உபயோகப்படுத்தும் விஷயம். இனி அந்த லேபிள் கீழ் உள்ள எல்லாவற்றையும் "read" போடாமல், நமக்கு தேவையானவற்றை மட்டும் (அதாவது ஒரு நாளைக்கு முன் வந்த பதிவுகள், ஒரு வாரம் முன் வந்தவை, இரண்டு வரம் முன் வந்தவை என) "Mark as read" போட்டுக்கலாம்.

ட்ரை பண்ணி பார்த்துட்டு சொல்லுங்க.

This news is for those using Wikipedia and bored with the old outlook. If you want to try Wikipedia with more colorful pages and customized options, then its time now, for that. Wikipedia has introduced several cool features in its beta release.

You can try Wikipedia Beta with a login account (of course). Hit “Try Beta” link on the right top of the page to customize your wiki. Apart from some good looking themes, there are other tweaks like advanced toolbar, custom CSS (Cascading Style Sheet), easy special character input and a few others. It has become more friendly for people actively participating in contributing to its articles, especially for the beginners.

To try a new look & feel, get an account with Wikipedia and browse to the My Preference –> Appearance page. You are free to chose between 9 skins. My own favorite was Vector.

If you don’t really find anything useful for you, you can always revert from Beta by clicking on the “Leave Beta” link at the top right.

ஊருக்கு எப்படி கால் பண்றீங்க?

Sunday அதுவுமா நல்லா மூக்கு பிடிக்க சாப்பிட்டு சும்மா இருக்கோமே, யாரையாவது தொல்லை பன்னுவோமே-ன்னு என்னோட ஒரு பக்க மூளை சொல்லிகிட்டே இருந்துது. வீட்ல அவர் வேற இல்லே.. மேட்ச் விளையாட போய்ட்டாரு. அவர் இருந்தா சண்டை போட்டு டைம் பாஸ் பண்ணியிருப்பேன். சரி.. ஊருக்கு போன் பண்ணலாம்னு போன் பண்ணி வெச்சதுக்கு அப்பறம் தான் யோசிச்சேன்.. ஊரு உலகத்துல எப்படி எல்லோரும் ஊருக்கு பேசறாங்கன்னு கேக்கலாமேன்னு. இதுக்கு அவ்ளோ முக்கியத்துவம் இல்லேனாலும், நாங்க ஊருக்கு வந்த புதுசுல மண்டை காஞ்ச விஷயங்கள்ல இதுவும் ஒன்று.

GMail யூஸ் பண்றவங்களுக்கு ஒரு நல்ல நியூஸ். பல இணைய தளங்களிலிருந்து எப்போவோ register பண்ண newsletters வந்து தொல்லை பண்ணிகிட்டே இருக்கா? ஒவ்வொரு முறை-யும் அந்த அந்த இணைய தளத்திற்கே போய் unsubscribe பண்றது கஷ்டமா இருக்கா? (அல்லது சோம்பேறிதனமா இருக்கா? ;) ).

He replied, "Well she was well endowed, I didn't want to tell her that she would have to take her breasts off the keyboard".

YouTube Experimenting 3D

That's the buzz for today! YouTube is experimenting their 3D video files now. This link gives an example video. You are free to chose between some standard 3D styles. For few you will need the 3D glasses (most of them are said to be available very commonly in the market). There are also few styles that doesn’t require glasses.

My Take: I don’t have 3D glasses immediately. So I chose the other view styles that doesn’t require one. But, frankly to say, I don’t find a lot of difference. The “mirror” 3D style was a little better. May be its just Me :( . Check out!!!

Moon Landing: Celebrating 40th Anniversary

It was in BBC news all this month… “Celebrating 40th Anniversary of the moon landing… That’s one small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind”. I should say that I was pretty bored with these ads. And now I have this in my Google Reader, too. But this one was definitely more interesting. I don’t know if any of you saw it already.

NASA had put up the video and other documents from the THE DAY. Check out this site. The “Interactive Features” link allows you to walk (?) through the Lunar surface and explore some points of interests. There is also a transcript of the conversation on-board. And few other interesting pieces of news for all those who are interested.

Additional Info: NASA is playing this Apollo 11 Mission, that happened on July 24, 1969. Tune in to NASA’s Radio to hear to it. Also, the audio transcripts are available (but be prepared yourself mentally to read more than 1300 pages ;) )

Delayed Firefox Startup on Windows

It was observed that Firefox 3.5 tends to startup too slow on Windows operating systems due to a bug that got introduced during it development stage. The browser was scanning for all temporary folders looking for information that was added by the OS itself, and other applications. For this reason, it is reported to take, even more than, a minute to start.

Firefox blogs had provided a workaround to speed up the startup, until the fix is available with the next release of the browser. Here is how you can clean the directories that it scans for (so that the scanning is pretty faster and the browser doesn’t take that long to start).

Digital Photography - Terms

BIT MAP IMAGE: An image with 1 bit of colour information per pixel is also known as a bit mapped image. The only colours displayed in a single bit mapped image are black and white. Adding bit depth allows the rendering of more colours. Photoshop deals with bitmap images.

BRIGHTNESS: One of three dimensions of colour; the other two are hue and saturation. The term ‘Brightness’ is used to describe differences in the intensity of light reflected from or transmitted through an image independent of its hue and saturation.

CMYK: The four process colours used in printing: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (K).

CMYK IMAGE: A four channel image containing a cyan, magenta, yellow, and black channel. A CMYK image is generally used to print a colour separation; it is also the way that inkjet printers output colour images, taking the original RGB image and translating it in the printer.

COLOUR CORRECTION: The changing of the colours of pixels in an image, including adjusting brightness, contrast, mid-level greys, hue and saturation to achieve optimum printed results.

COLOUR PROOF: A representation of the final printed product, for checking colour accuracy and other elements.

COLOUR SEPARATION: The process of splitting full-colour artwork into its CMYK components; one or all four of the separate pieces of film from which a four-colour version will be printed.

CONTINUOUS TONE IMAGE: An image containing gradient tones from black to white.

CONTRAST: The tonal gradation between the highlights, mid tones, and shadows in an image.

DPI: Dots per inch: a measure of image resolution.

FOUR COLOUR PROCESS PRINTING: The basic method of recreating a broad spectrum of colours on a printing press.

GREY SCALE IMAGE: An image consisting of up to 256 levels of grey, with 8 bits of data or more per pixel.

HALFTONE: The reproduction of a continuous-tone image, made by using a screen that breaks the image into various size dots.

HIGHLIGHT: The lightest part of an image, represented in a halftone by the smallest dots, or the absence of dots.

HUE: The main attribute of a colour that distinguishes it from other colours.

IMAGE RESOLUTION: The amount of data stored in an image file, measured in pixels per inch (ppi).

JPEG: Joint Photographic Experts Group. This group established a standard method for compressing and decompressing digitised photos or images. Virtually all digital cameras can save images in JPEG.

LPI: Lines per inch: a measure of resolution, usually screen frequency in halftones. Applies to four colour reproduction in magazines and newspapers. It indicates how close together the lines in a halftone grid are. A higher LPI figure indicates greater detail and sharpness. Offset printing, as used in newspaper production, usually ranges from 85-133 LPI. High quality colour magazines can go to 300 LPI.

LUMINANCE LIGHTNESS: The highest of the individual RGB values plus the lowest of the individual RGB values, divided by two; a component of a Hue-Saturation-Lightness image.

MID TONE: Tonal value of a dot, located approximately halfway between the highlight value and the shadow value.

MOIRÉ PATTERN: An unwanted and undesirable pattern in colour printing, resulting from incorrect screen angles of overprinting halftones. Often seen in images of certain fabrics and television images of a line pattern. Moiré patterns can be minimised with the use of proper screen angles. In digital photography unwanted moiré patterns can be removed in software.

PIXEL: A single dot on a computer display or in a digital image.

PICT: An early file format for saving graphics or image information.

PPI: Pixels per inch, a measure of the resolution of a computer display or digital image.

PRINTER RESOLUTION: The amount of detail a printer will reproduce, measured in dots per inch (dpi). There is native resolution and interpolated resolution: the former indicates the true resolution of the printer or scanner; the latter is a function of software and detail is added artificially.

PROCESS COLOUR: The four colour pigments cyan, magenta, yellow, and black used in colour printing.

RAW FORMAT: A relatively recent method of capturing digital images. A RAW image file contains processed data from the image sensor of a camera. It consists of data written to the camera’s memory and needs to be interpreted by specialised software, then re-saved in a normal format, like JPEG or TIFF. The benefit of RAW is that it is closest to the original image and uncompressed. The disadvantages are that a RAW file is much larger. A RAW image is usually closest to the original picture in the sense that it preserves exactly what the camera’s sensor captured.

RESAMPLE: To change the resolution of an image. Resampling down discards pixel information in an image … the image remains sharp; resampling up adds pixel information through interpolation… sharpness can suffer.

RESOLUTION: The number of pixels per inch in an image, or the number of dots per inch used by an output device.

RGB: Red, green, and blue: the additive primaries. RGB is the basic additive colour model used for colour video display, as on a computer monitor.

SATURATION: The amount of grey in a colour. More grey in a colour means lower saturation; less grey in a colour means higher saturation.

SCREEN ANGLE: The angle at which the halftone screens are placed in relation to one another.

SCREEN FREQUENCY: The density of dots on the halftone screen, commonly measured in lines per inch (lpi). Also known as screen ruling.

SHADOW: The darkest part of an image, represented in a halftone reproduction by the largest dots.

THUMBNAILS: Miniature pictures, resembling slides, used in computer displays to indicate the contents of a graphic file.

TIFF: Tagged Image File Format, a file format for exchanging bit mapped and grey scale images among applications.

VECTOR IMAGE: A method of creating images with the use of geometric points, lines, curves, shapes and polygons. A vector graphics program uses mathematical formulae to construct the image. There is no limit to the final sized of the image, unlike bitmap images. Adobe Illustrator creates vector images.

I'm new to blogging. I'm still a "Desktop Bee" and for past few days I was looking for a good editor that can make blogging easy for me. Especially because, I sometimes found blogger.com either too slow or giving error messages. (Well.. I don't know if it was just me. And, I didn't dig more into that). 

Of all the applications that I tried, Windows Live Writer is worth mentioning. I would say that it was good. Quite fast, unlike any other MS products. But I really had an issue with it when I had to switch between proxies. Somehow, it was not really liking my proxy settings. And the weird fact is that, it works when I have my proxy settings ON, and not the otherwise (I would have expected the contrary, though!).

Having that not really useful, I spent some time today finding a good way to do the blogging "faster & easier". And, it's my conclusion that publishing your posts by e-mail is the best! Blogger lets you to configure an e-mail id, to which you can send your posts. It accepts text and pictures now (I'm gonna send this one by e-mail). However, the e-mail ID needs to be maintained as "secret" so that, you don't allow others to publish through your blog! Blogger actually doesn't validate the e-mail ID from which the message is received. I tried with Google Mail and Yahoo.. Both works. Plus, I think this is useful for the ones that does not have access to internet based e-mail at their work. You can still send your post from your work e-mail.

I think this is the better solution than the others, that I tried.

Q: I'm working with Google Docs today... and I have to link to a PDF (within my Docs) from a Word document (also within my Docs). I tried to insert an hyperlink. And google provides me an option to insert Document from my own library. But what surprises me is that, it does not list the PDFs. Just the "Documents".!!!

And then the fight started...

My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and my wife kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat
alone at a nearby table.
I asked my wife, 'Do you know him?'

'Yes,' She sighed, 'He's my old boyfriend.
I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since.'
'My God!' I said to my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'
And then the fight started...

A woman is standing & looking in the bedroom mirror.
She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband,
'I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a
compliment.'
The husband replies, 'Your eyesight's damn near perfect.'
And then the fight started..... .

I asked my wife, "Where do you want to go for our anniversary?"

It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation.
"Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said.

So I suggested, "How about the kitchen?"

And that's when the fight started....

When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that
I should get it fixed..
But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first:
the truck, the car, e-mail, fishing, always something more important to me.
Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point.
When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall
grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors.
I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house.
I was gone only a few minutes. When I came out again I handed her a
toothbrush.
'When you finish cutting the grass,' I said, 'you might as well sweep the
driveway.'

And then the fight started...
